The Blessed Virgin Saint Mary #

The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church honors the Blessed Virgin St. Mary most of all the Saints. She is venerated especially for the call she received from Almighty God through the Archangel Gabriel when he said to her: “Hail highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!” (St. Luke 1:28) So we, receiving and believing these words of the Holy Gospel honor and praise her as the Mother of the God-Man, Our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Most Blessed Virgin Mother of God has always had a very special place within Ethiopian life, and veneration of the Mother of Our Lord holds the highest place among the Saints. Among the Saints in Heaven the Church holds that she is venerated in a special way. She is loved by her Son so dearly that her prayers are especially heard by the Saviour. Because of the Mission she received from Almighty God, her life is mostly closely linked with the Mysteries of the Lord Jesus, her Son. There is no one who has followed in the footsteps of the Incarnate Word more closely and with more fervor than St. Mary. Higher than the Cherubim and more glorious than the Seraphim she is full of grace, she is the Mother of God, who happily and willing bore and gave birth to the Redeemer of us all.
